Our lead instructors have taught numerous wilderness medicine courses, are certified to teach through SOLO, and bring their own experience outside of teaching into the classroom through lectures, storytelling, and building realistic practice scenarios.
Makai has been bringing groups outdoors for many years, as an assistant guide for climbing and rafting trips and leading day hikes during high school. In his college years, Makai fell in love with wilderness medicine and expanded his palate to include canyoneering in Oregon's beautiful creeks, as well as becoming a trip leader for climbing, rafting, and numerous other activities through Oregon State University's Adventure Leadership Institute.Â
Makai has been teaching wilderness medicine since 2015, when he earned his Wilderness EMT certification at SOLO headquarters in New Hampshire. Since becoming an EMT, Makai has worked as a professional ski patroller at Mt. Hood's Timberline Lodge during winter and summer seasons. Makai now works full-time aa firefighter/paramedic in Oregon's Willamette Valley.
Our assistants are aspiring wilderness medicine instructors, and help ensure courses run smoothly, from painting moulage to managing supplies and transitions. They each bring their own vast experience and knowledge to the course.
Kyle has a passion for mountaineering, ice climbing, skiing, and all things alpine, but also enjoys rock climbing and water sports. At Oregon State, Kyle became qualified as a lead climbing and rafting guide, and worked as a teaching assistant for mountaineering classes for several years.
Kyle earned his Wilderness EMT at SOLO in New Hampshire in 2016. Since earning his EMT, Kyle has worked for several fire and EMS agencies, and now works full time as a paramedic in Eastern Oregon.
